Job Description

  • Prepares, maintains and updates general and specific laboratory rules, regulations, trainings, documents, manuals, procedures and work instructions; all these by complying with relevant standards and best practices on laboratory quality management and laboratory biosafety, biosecurity and biorisk management ·
  • Provides laboratory diagnostic and therapeutic information, products, and services by establishing specimen preparation procedures; developing and implementing analytical procedures; evaluating laboratory information; consulting with pathologists; reporting results according to protocols mandated by the hospital and public health department. ·
  • Maintains laboratory equipment inventory and performance by establishing quality standards; developing operations, quality, and troubleshooting procedures; ensuring personnel compliance; certifying instrument performance; arranging equipment replacement, service, and repair.
  • Maintains laboratory supplies and reagents inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level; anticipating needed supplies; placing and expediting orders for supplies; verifying receipt of supplies.
  • Maintains laboratory productivity by monitoring workload of functional areas; identifying peak and slack periods; making operational or personnel adjustment.
  • Maintains quality results by participating in the related quality assurance program; consulting with pathologists; performing proficiency surveys; reviewing quality control and quality assurance programs; making adjustments in policy and procedures; generating reports; maintaining records.
  • Maintains laboratory information system by identifying information needs and problems; recommending improvements; establishing priorities; testing; writing user manuals, procedures and work instructions; training personnel; maintaining security and confidentiality.
  • Implements new programs, tests, methods, instrumentation, and procedures by investigating alternatives; preparing proposals; developing and performing parallel testing; monitoring progress.
  • Maintains laboratory personnel, including interns and support personnel, by recruiting, selecting, orienting, and training them.
  • Completes operational requirements by scheduling and assigning personnel and following up on their work results.
  • Maintains laboratory personnel results, including interns and support personnel, by counseling and disciplining them; and planning, monitoring, and appraising their job results.
  • Ensures the delivery of customer expectations and satisfactions
  • Coordinates and maintains a good relationship with local and international suppliers and distributors of all laboratory facilities, equipment, supplies and reagents ·
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
  • Prepares physicians, nurses, patients, and students by teaching analytical theory, testing methodology, and the role of tested components in human physiology and medical practice.
  • Complies with state and professional continuing education licensure requirements by providing in-service programs; monitoring outcomes.
  • Resolves problems by consulting with pathologists, other laboratory managers, technical coordinators, laboratory directors, physicians, nurses, and other health care professionals; attending committee meetings.
  • Bills for services by completing requests for service; monitoring billed units; providing the billing office with service codes.
  • Provides administrative support for the hospital by acting as manager on call.
  • May delegate certain tasks, upon the approval of the Laboratory Director, to ensure the timely delivery and good performance of all duties, responsibility and expectations · Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Advanced training in biosafety, biosecurity and biorisk management.
  • Demonstrated ability to strategically manage all technical and operational aspects of a complex, high-tech laboratory facility.
  • Skill in examining and re-engineering operations and procedures, formulating policy, and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of the principles, processes, and technology associated with laboratory research and administration within the field of study.
  • Specific knowledge related the nature of research being conducted in the facility.
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of electronic data management principles, strategies, methods, procedures, and techniques.
  • Ability to supervise and train personnel, including interns and support personnel; to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
  • Ability to maintain a good relationship with all personnel, including interns and support personnel, while ensuring that all laboratory policies and the corresponding rules, regulations, trainings, documents, manuals, procedures and work instructions are observed and followed.
  • Ability to communicate with and understand the complex requirements of scientists, engineers and professional staff in the deployment of services.
  • Ability to interact effectively and credibly with advanced technology researchers and representatives.
  • Ability to perform complex tasks and to prioritize multiple projects.
  • Ability to analyze complex problems, interpret operational needs, and develop integrated, creative solutions.
  • Demonstrated operations planning and quality management skills.
  • Organizational planning, structuring, and staffing skills.
  • Skill in financial planning and fiscal management.
