Job Description

Under the supervision of the Department Laboratory Coordinator and Department Chair, the Laboratory Technician I (T-03) is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the ES Laboratories (MO/SEC/CTC). The Laboratory Technician I reports to the faculty member designated as Lab Coordinator and to the Chairperson of the Department. The Laboratory Technician coordinates with the other support staff/lab technicians and concerned faculty of the department as needed in performing lab duties.


  • Laboratory Task
    • Gives class orientation on laboratory policies on the use of laboratory facilities, equipment and safety protocols.
    • Performs in class actual demonstration on the application and uses of different laboratory and field equipment.
    • Maintains order and cleanliness of the laboratory premises. This includes regular coordinating with the assigned maintenance personnel to ensure cleanliness and orderliness of ES lab and surrounding facilities/premises.
    • Assists Systems Administrator with:
      • Setting up audio visual equipment for class presentation and post lab activity.
      • Monitoring and releasing reservations for audio visual equipment
      • Conducting inventory of audio visual equipment
      • Quotations for hardware and software in coordination with CPO, MIS or ITRMO for budget proposal
    • Assists in the laboratory class activities.
      • Prepares laboratory equipment and materials needed.
      • Issues laboratory materials and equipment.
      • Assists the student in experiment set up.
      • Assists the faculty to ensure a safe working environment for those working in the laboratory.
    • Assists in field work activity on and off the campus.
      • Conducts maintenance check and calibrates field equipment.
      • Assists the students in completing field work forms and other documents needed.
      • Assists the students set up perimeters and equipment in the field.
      • Assists the faculty in supervising and ensuring safe working environment of the students.
    • Assists the thesis students for the laboratory analysis and field work (graduate and under graduate ES major students).
      • Assists in preparing laboratory equipment and materials needed.
      • Performs calibration procedure of specialized laboratory and field equipment.
      • Assists the student in laboratory experiment set up.
      • Dispenses chemicals and materials.
      • Provides assistance in securing materials needed in the laboratory experiment set up.
      • Assists the thesis adviser in supervision of the students to ensure safe working environment.
    • Coordinates with the Chemistry Department for the procurement of PNP and PDEA controlled chemicals.
    • Coordinates with the authorized department/personnel for proper waste management and disposal of hazardous chemicals/substances.
    • Performs maintenance, diagnosis, and calibration of specialized laboratory and field equipment and ensures documentation of such.
    • Performs fabrication and simple repair of laboratory equipment or electrical concerns in coordination with authorized personnel.
    • Performs regular cleaning of the Department’s refrigerators/freezers.
  • Administrative Task:
    • Performs errands on and off the campus.
      • Distributes and picks-up non-confidential documents/materials to/from the different department and offices inside the campus.
      • Photocopies non-confidential documents for the department copy before distribution to the different departments and offices.
      • Procures laboratory materials outside the campus.
    • Provides necessary documents for the annual budget proposal of the department.
      • Coordinates with the faculty and research proponent for the equipment needed to prioritized for the next school year.
      • Contacts potential suppliers and gathers/evaluates quotations in coordination with CPO, department admin officers.
    • Performs/prepares the needed reports/documents in relation to PNP and PDEA controlled chemicals.
    • Conducts regular inventory of glasswares, chemicals/reagents, lab & field equipment and other lab supplies and materials and ensures availability of reports/documents as needed.
    • Prepares the required reports/documents in relation to scheduled departmental and university evaluation and accreditation.
    • Performs other tasks that maybe requested/needed by the Department as relevant to the laboratories such as student’s clearance, lab breakage, issuance/monitoring of other teaching/research equipment/gadgets/accessories, etc.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree
  • Experience in laboratory procedures, for example, the use, maintenance and repair of instruments for physical / chemical / biological methods and procedures
  • Experience in assisting students, faculty and researchers in the laboratory
  • Knowledge of management (including procurement and disposal) of stock inventory of laboratory chemicals, consumables and instruments
  • Knowledge of preparation of chemical standards, demonstration of equipment
  • Experience in handling of audio visual equipment
  • Basic computer software skills (e.g. documents and spreadsheets). Knowledge is hardware and software troubleshooting an advantage
