Writing Tutor  

A writing tutor is expected to be Trained and Equipped to help students develop their writing but not to give answers, edit/proofread essays or rewrite papers.

The primary goal is to help develop a writer’s intended meaning, not to correct errors. They should pass the foundation skills training, product-specific training and nesting period before being endorsed to operations.

The essential functions and expectations of this position include:

• Accept the first essay that the queue offers.
• Review the writer’s Submission Form and/or Writer’s History.
• Save the student’s essay.
• Copy and paste the E-structor Response Form (ERF) to the top of the student’s essay.
• Address one significant strength and three higher-order concerns (HOCs) and lower-order concerns (LOCs) in the ERF.
• Embed strategically chosen dialogic comments in the student’s draft.
• Proofread the entire tutorial.
• Upload the markup to the Smarthinking site.
• Maximize availability during logged in hours.
• Respond well to coaching opportunities

Our ideal candidate will have the following skills and qualifications:

Education: Bachelor’s degree graduate

Experience: Minimum of 2 years in tutoring writing and/or tutoring (language, communication, ESL)

• Degree in a writing-extensive field such as education, literature, English studies and communication
• Excellent command of the English language, specifically in written communication
• Experience in ESL teaching
• Teaching experience in writing, composition or any related subject

• Excellent command of the English language, specifically in written communication
• Experience in ESL teaching
• Ability to respond to various genres of writing from a range of student populations in both asynchronous and synchronous modalities.
• Should be a supportive and critical reader
• Be able to provide commentary that focuses on the larger issues and the secondary focus should be on surface-level issues
• Be able to interact with students to develop study aids during synchronous sessions
