Energy Economics Analyst  

Job Description

• This position is responsible for providing support in energy market analysis and accurate energy market forecasts used by various groups in AboitizPower as a key input to commercial decision making and long-term planning.
• This may include developing, maintaining, and continually reviewing market models. S/he will also be assisting in evaluating the effectiveness of software and other forecasting tools to ensure that they are efficient and aligned with the goals of the team.

• Develop, maintain and continually re-assess/review market models which include but not limited to: WESM Energy Market (hourly, 5-minute or any market configuration in Luzon, Visayas & Mindanao, when available), WESM Reserves Market (co-optimization with Energy), Renewable Energy Market, Full nodal grid transmission network model, Distribution network model, Any other market promulgated by industry policy makers and regulators

• Evaluate effectiveness of software and other forecasting tools (e.g. Plexos, R, and in-house demand forecast models). Manage version control, security, system upgrade and appraise Management when to purchase new tools to keep up with the fast-paced market changes. Ensure alignment with group-wide IT and systems development standards.
• Actively participate in the Company’s Scenario Planning activities. Maintain a monitoring system of leading and lagging indicators of the market, and regularly re-validate inputs and assumptions together with the scenario planning core team
• Perform extensive research and economic analysis of the Philippines and other jurisdictions’ market forces and policies affecting the electricity market design and evolution. Translate these market dynamics into mathematical/financial models to: Anticipate changing market conditions and its impact on business performance • Assess operational, regulatory, marketing, and trading strategies • Provide support in the evaluation of projects by the Business Development and PD&E teams • Provide support to the Strategy team in their long-term planning discussions and analyses
• Ensure concerned parties in the Energy Trading and Sales (COBU) Department are duly informed on any changes in the market dynamics that will in turn change the business outlook. Work together with COBU Team Leaders towards formulation of strategies and action plans
• Provide regular updates summarizing the latest market developments and movements. Appraise Management and key stakeholders on key issues that merit immediate action and/or re-allocation of resources.
• Attend meetings, fora, conferences and trainings initiated by key market players in the local and international power industry.
• Build local and foreign relationships with the goal of being identified as a partner in electricity market development. Specifically, build connections with modelers of spot market, transmission and distribution network (e.g. Academe, Government, Genco/Utility, Consultant Plexos users).
• Gather and consolidate data and maintain database on market intelligence on power plant status in the grid (planned and forced outages, commissioning and testing status, project developments vis-àvis new players, power plant ownership and affiliate relationships)

• Strong analytical and planning skills;
• Good communication and presentation skills;
• Excellent problem-solving skills;
• Graduate of Economics, Business Management, or any Engineering or Math-related course
• Preferably has at least one year of exprience in Energy Economics and/or Energy Trading, or Energy Products;
• Preferably has experience in electricity market modeling using forecast tools or statistical price modeling (i.e. EMCAS, Marketsym, Aurora, Plexos, R, etc.)
