Job Description
The Medical Educator (ME) in is a field based position with a key role in educating patients living with Diabetes as well as helping them manage their medication and disease. Because we recognize that it takes more than medicine to overcome the challenges of Diabetes, we take a comprehensive approach to addressing the disease, which includes delivering practical support in Diabetes care, instructing patients and/or caregivers in disease management, and stimulating action within communities to improve Diabetes care.
By providing answers based on individual needs and facilitating training sessions to patients, HCPs and other key stakeholders involved in the treatment of Diabetes care, Medical Educators have the opportunity to help improve patient outcomes by providing a needed service that addresses important unmet medical needs.
Primary Responsibilities:
Training of patients with Diabetes
Diabetes is a personal journey that requires individual support and solutions. Medical Educators in Diabetes Care will be reliable, trusted partners of patients and/or their caregivers, who anticipate the needs of individuals living with Diabetes. They are providing quality education either on a 1:1 basis or in a group setting to people living with Diabetes.
For individual training or group training the ME:
- must comply with all global and local laws and regulations
- must comply with all relevant privacy regulations, obtain meaningful consents to set expectations, and always store and use a patient’s Personal Information in line with the promises we have made in the consent
Training of other key stake holders
The Medical Educator is expected to deliver educational presentations to external nurses, pharmacists, hospital groups and other relevant roles while observing all relevant policies and procedures.
Communicating important and relevant individual patient information to the HCP
The Medical Educator will be expected to provide professional written and verbal patient education feedback to the treating Health Care Practitioner.
Maintenance of Scientific and Educational Expertise
Medical Educators will maintain the highest level of knowledge regarding current disease state product (including competitor products) to enable them to be credible peers of Health Care Practitioners. The Medical Educator will be expected to engage in continuous learning within the therapeutic area they represent.
Other Medical Activities
While the focus of the Medical Educator’s role is to support and educate patients and training of external stakeholders, Medical Educators may be involved in other activities, including:
(Supervisor should establish boundaries to ensure that the balance of responsibilities is primarily customer-facing)
- Responding to “on-label” unsolicited questions in the medical information area of a medical conference exhibit booth
- Participating in Consultant and Health Education meetings if approved by their supervisor
- Provide medical training to sales
- Managing in-bound and outbound calls
- Conducting Customer Satisfaction Surveys
Management of Administrative Activities
Medical Educators will effectively and efficiently use approved resources to fulfill administrative, procedural and legal requirements associated with their daily work.
Medical Educators should:
- Maintain database entries in multiple computer programs such as VEEVA, Microsoft Office, Excel, etc.
- Continually be in compliance with all procedural requirements of the role
- Appropriately be using available resources at all times.
Medical Educators are expected to be responsible stewards of their time and demonstrate competency in budget management.
Minimum Qualifications
- College degree or Bachelors level degree
- HCP background*
- Medical expertise and/or proficient knowledge of the disease state and current treatment options.
- Good interpersonal and communication skills
- Basic computer skills
- Basic understanding of the English Language (sufficient to read and understand procedures, training and medical literature)
- Ability to build professional relationship with customers
- Ability to work effectively and share information within a team environment
- Basic understanding of more than 1 local language (recommended)
* According to the ME PSP Procedure and to ensure we provide the best education possible to HCPs and to patients, a Medical Educator is an HCP who meets the definition of one of the following roles: a doctor of medicine or osteopathy, podiatrist, dentist, chiropractor, clinical psychologist, optometrist, physician’s assistant, nurse, nurse practitioner, nurse-midwife, nutritionist, dietitian, biotechnologist, physiotherapist, speech therapist, pharmacist or a clinical social worker who is authorized and performing within the scope of their practice as defined by local laws
