About Makerspace Manila

Makerspace Manila is finally OPEN FOR BUSINESS! Come visit us at our first branch at 2nd Floor, Bldg. B Ayala Malls Solenad 3, Nuvali, Sta. Rosa, Laguna. We have an ambitious mission at our makerspace and that is to break down the barriers to technology. For the first three weeks since we've soft-opened, we’ve had kids as young as 7 years of age already building line-following robots, remote-controlled cars, scaled-down elevators, robotic arms, even powered model villages. And here’s the thing — we’re just getting started! But what exactly are we? The term “makerspace” is, in the simplest sense, a place (space) where people (makers) make things. Makerspaces all over the world — about 3,000 of us when we last checked — form the global Maker Movement with roots from the USA, having been jumpstarted by a tech-influenced DIY magazine called “MAKE”. MAKE Magazine is the brainchild of the visionary Dale Dougherty and his talented team at Maker Media Inc., launched in 2005. Yes, 2005, more than ten years ago. Outside the Philippines, makers are already building successful commercial products like the Pebble smartwatch (which broke Kickstarter records), Sugru (the moldable glue that turns to rubber), the Square mobile electronic payment system (say goodbye to credit card terminals), and the Dodocase (shame on you if you haven’t heard of the Dodocase). There are hundreds more of such success stories. In the Philippines, we are just getting started and we have to make up for lost time. So, at Makerspace Manila, we hit the ground running by showing people the power of the maker mentality. No longer are you (or your kids) slaves to technology, in many ways you can be masters of it. Students are able to convert what before were simply concepts (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) into real-world applications. Best of all, we provide the next generation — our children — critical 21st century skills to prepare them for a technology-driven and competitive future. We’re talking confidence building, creative and critical thinking, independence, open communication, collaboration, exploration, creation and invention. Because really, how else do you prepare our kids for the jobs of the future? Adults, you are not forgotten! Our makerspace also features many making tools and implements -- plotter-cutter, thermal press, 3D printer, laser engraver, power tools, woodworking tools, rotary tools, to name a few -- which will allow you to bring your ideas to reality. Ever wanted to start a business but don't know how to build the product of your dreams? Drop by our space, talk to our makers, and see how we can help you make your dream a reality. We also hold workshops year-round in order to elevate your skills -- design thinking, illustration, programming, 3D modeling, among others. Join us now, and be part of the global Maker Movement. Why Join Us? We're breaking new ground and you see the positive impact we make every single day. You'll be at ground zero for the Philippine Maker Movement. You'll be part of a unique set of extremely talented people who want to make a difference. We work with and for like-minded makers and students of all ages. We are not your typical corporate culture and we hate red tape. Our organizational chart is practically flat. Things are done quickly because the owners are involved in day-to-day decision-making. We want you to have autonomy in order to grow and show us what you can do. We are flexible and we see our team members as more than employees. You get to play with our many toys! At present in the space you can explore 3D printing, woodworking, T-shirt making, sticker printing, photo printing, electronics, etc. You get paid to play, tinker, and create things with amazing people.
