Design Coordinator/Design Manager Job Description

The ENDEC, Inc. Design Coordinator/Design Manager is an office-based position that performs a management, technical, organizational and supervisory role in support of ENDEC, Inc. construction projects.

The Design Coordinator/Design Manager works as part of the construction management team working alongside other ENDEC, Inc. construction management staff and our engineering and design consultants and our subcontractors. The Design Coordinator/Design Manager will be a member of the ENDEC, Inc. staff responsible for the project interface with our client representatives, architects, engineers, construction managers, supervisors, planners, surveyors and subcontractors. The Design Coordinator/Design Manager will have the primary responsibility for the development of the project engineering, design and specifications, as well as assisting with construction quality control, project schedule management and quantity surveying.

The Design Coordinator/Design Manager will be responsible to the Project Managers and to the ENDEC, Inc. Quality Manager for scheduling, coordinating, reviewing, monitoring, evaluating, reporting and enforcing full compliance with all contract documents, code and other requirements for project designs and specifications.

Design Coordinator/Design Manager typical work activities

Work activities vary depending on the nature of the project but typically involve:

  • Manage the Designer of Record’s (DOR’s) project design team.
  • Manage the process of developing design submittals, to include: Initial site investigation activities, Basis of Design, design drawings, and project specifications.
  • Prepare in-depth reviews of each design submittals from the DOR for each design stage, ensuring at the minimum compliance to the project contract requirements, specifications, and all appropriate codes & standards prior to submission to the client.
  • Ensures that each design is “designed to cost”
  • Ensures that design submittals are submitted on time to the client in accordance with Design Schedule.
  • Coordinates with Project Controls Specialists and Project QA/QC Engineer in updating/validating Submittal Register for each project.
  • Attend necessary meetings with the client and DOR.
  • Prepare Design Submittal Tracker as required by senior management.
  • Provide recommendation on design/technical issues to the senior management for design and construction related matters.
  • Review and recommend approval of DOR’s invoice.
  • Ensure Design matches or within the budget (BOQ).
  • Participate routinely on Project Inspections ensuring Subcontractor compliance with the Drawings and Specifications.
  • Review of shop drawings and As-built drawings.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture or Civil Engineering, Registration/License required.
  • Very strong analytical, planning and organizational skills.
  • 5 to 7+ years of experience in construction design coordination and management
  • 3 to 5 years in construction management or general contracting/subcontracting experience
  • Clear, professional and concise written and verbal reporting skills in business English.
  • Ability to create, present and explain data in charts and graphs
  • Strong skills in MS Office suite required; MS Excel, MS Word, PowerPoint, Outlook (email)
  • Must be AutoCadd proficient
  • Can work under pressure with short/changing deadlines

Design Coordinator/Design Manager Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Familiar with construction management processes and procedures and sequencing for small-medium sized institutional facilities
  • Basic understanding of construction cost estimating and financing processes
  • Basic understanding of construction contracts
  • Understanding of construction-related engineering disciplines and coordination requirements
  • Knowledge of the Design-Build construction project delivery process
  • Understanding of construction quality control procedures
  • Knowledge of and understanding of various codes and policies for engineering, design and construction

  • Able to develop, read, understand and manage construction specifications to ensure specified quality of construction is in accordance with the contract and design
  • Able to use appropriate computer programs/software to manage and communicate project progress, issues, status and other construction and quality management issues.
  • Clear, professional and concise written and verbal reporting skills in English
