History
All Asian Countertrade Inc. was founded in 1994 by Michael L. Escaler with the partnership of Louis Dreyfus and Nissho-Iwai. We began operations with four people and the intention of creating a world-class Filipino trading company that could compete with international trading houses.
Our first major transaction was to supply one of the world's largest non-alcoholic beverage manufacturers with six months of sugar at a time of rising prices. Prior to our entry into the market, the company had been unable to secure a steady source of sugar as traders refused to sell them more than a week's supply. Our arrival gave the company access to half of their sugar requirements at a fixed price, a first in the Philippine sugar industry. It was not long before other industrial sugar users came to seek All Asian's exceptional, bespoke sugar service solutions.
While pioneering ways to help those in demand of sugar, All Asian Countertrade also found ways to assist those supplying sugar. In the same year as our founding, we managed to support one of the country's oldest sugar mills, PASUDECO. In order to help the area's sugarcane planters, we began paying fair prices for their product, thereby significantly increasing their income and their ability to continue to grow sugar. This helped the lives of many farmers, and gave new life to the 70-year old sugar mill.
As our company grew, we began to establish new businesses in order to enhance our ability to provide sugar to our clients. In 1996, we founded All Asian Transport to have complete control over our logistic requirements. In 2001, we imported a sugar mill from Okinawa, Japan to increase the efficiency of sugar milling in Pampanga, ensuring the province's sugar planting viability. Today, our company consists of a wide range of businesses dedicated to improving the quality of our sugar, farms, logistics, customer service and community.
About Our Founder
Michael Escaler started his career in 1972 when he left for NYC. He spent a year at Nisho Iwai and shortly joined a commodities trading company, ACLI, where he was mentored by a renowned sugar trader, Gerry Ascher. At the age of 27 he was assigned to London by his company to head their sugar operations. This made him the youngest vice president in the whole company.
Within a couple of years he was hired by Philipp Brothers as Vice President to head their white sugar in the world market. He returned to the Philippines in 1994 to start AACI in partnership with Louis Dreyfus, Nisho Iwai and a respected local trader Mr. Julio Sy.
