Job Description

  • Listen to the recorded dictation of a doctor or other healthcare professional.
  • Transcribe and interpret the dictation into diagnostic test results, operative reports, and other documents
  • Listen to medical reports carefully using headset.
  • Write and produce discharge summaries, medical history and physical examination reports, operative reports, consultation reports, autopsy reports, diagnostic-imaging studies, progress notes, and referral letters.
  • Use medical terminology to accurately convey diagnosis or treatment.
  • Translate medical jargon and abbreviations
  • Comply with specific standards that apply to the style of medical records and to the legal and ethical requirements for keeping patient information confidential

Minimum Qualifications

  • Allied medical course undergrad or with background in Medical Course (Nurse, PT, MT, OT)
  • Experience in the medical or healthcare industry, a plus
  • Ability to listen intently to recordings for details
  • Ability to decipher dialects well, is a plus
  • Typing skills 30 – 60 WPM
  • Must pass a general aptitude test
  • Strong analytical and planning skills
  • Good communication and presentation skills
  • Excellent problem-solving skills

Required Skills and Abilities for Medical Transcription

  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Above-average typing skills, writing skills, grammar skills, memory skills, and communication skills
  • Basic to above-average knowledge of computers
  • Can accurately transcribe information, particularly patient identifying information
  • Ability to follow directions and instructions
  • Real-world experience in medical transcription
  • Will consult reference materials and resources to ensure use of correct terminology
  • Has ability to record and maintain records and number figures

IMPORTANT QUALITIES OF A MEDICAL TRANSCRIPTIONIST

  • Computer skills. Medical transcriptionists must be comfortable using computers and word-processing software, because those tools are an essential part of their jobs.
  • Critical-thinking skills. Transcriptionists must be able to assess medical reports and spot any inaccuracies and inconsistencies in finished drafts. They must also be able to think critically when doing research to find the information that they need and to ensure that sources are both accurate and reliable.
  • Listening skills. Transcriptionists must listen carefully to dictation from physicians. They must be able to hear and interpret the intended meaning of the medical report.
  • Time-management skills. Because dictation must be done quickly, medical transcriptionists must be comfortable working under short deadlines.
  • Writing skills. Medical transcriptionists need a good understanding of the English language and grammar.
