Appreciating the Role of Manpower Behind Every New Technology

For all the fanfare which new applications, software, and digital processes receive, manpower remains the one constant that is almost always part of new technological advances

Thanks to ongoing technological advancements in software and communications, there continues to be a rapid rise of new solutions that continues to significantly changed the way people purchase goods, acquire services, and conduct business.

Apart from making processes more convenient and efficient in a number of industries, the rapid development of various apps and digital platforms have also given rise to new businesses and professions altogether, with industries like digital marketing and positions such as social media managers being pretty much non-existent over a decade ago.

Indeed, the use of tech in human resources, payroll, and commerce is now the norm, with just about every company looking to grow its business exploring newly developed solutions to improve its operations and get ahead of the competition. But, as much fanfare as technology gets, a constant aspect of it is sometimes taken for granted.

Innovation is Not Just Technology

During his presentation at the Asia HR Innovation Summit held last September in Pasay City, Machine Ventures co-founder and CEO Shahab Shabibi expressed how while technology continues to advance, new innovations are not exactly the only solution.

“Many think that in order to be innovative, we have to be Silicon Valley. We need to build technology. We need to get developers to build apps. People think apps are technology. But we shouldn’t think that. We think of technology as a way to approach our old problems with new ways. The true solution is the thinking and people behind the technology, and the technologies are just tools.”

As the head of a Philippines-based incubator providing financial support and management guidance to people trying to start their own businesses in the country, he further explained how he continues to observe the local workforce continuing to teem with potential that so far is not tapped as much locally as it is internationally.

“The human capital market is extremely underserved. The biggest export of the Philippines are people. Eleven percent of the nation’s gross domestic product is from overseas Filipinos, there are 1.3 million business process outsourcing employees in the Philippines. We are also at the peak of the youth population, where 50-percent of the people are those under 35 years old. There are companies around the world tapping into the human capital potential of the Philippines, but for now not as much companies making the most of it.”

Providing Opportunity to the Workforce

Looking to further help the local workforce meet its potential, Shahabi and Machine Ventures developed MyKuya, an on-demand platform providing real-time access to the largest workforce community in Philippines for consumers and enterprises.

Shabi believes that through the platform, Filipino workers, even those that are not as skilled as the rest of the workforce, will have an opportunity not only to make a living, but also to learn along the way and eventually gain greater responsibilities and greater pay as they become more skilled.

“If we could have the workforce earn money by doing things for consumers and companies, learn things while doing so, be part of a community that teaches them and pays them, then we can do a lot. Expecting a complete a complete overall of our education system can take a long time, but this is something we can do right now. So people can start with entry level jobs, learn about it, become good at it, then get upskilled. imagine learning things while getting paid for it.”
