1. Officials encourage OFWs to vote within a month

Some 1.3 million overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) who registered as voters have one month, from April 9 to May 9, to elect their new leaders. “Starting April 9, OFWs abroad will have the opportunity to choose for a month leaders who will manage their (OFWs) invaluable economic contribution to the country and our people,” said Rafael Sequis, chair of the department of foreign affairs (DFA) Overseas’ Voting Secretariat, adding a small 1.3 million of the country’s 10 million OFWs registered as voters up to the end of registration period on October 31, 2015.

2. BDO extends P998M to Interflour for expansion, generates more jobs

BDO Unibank, Inc. (BDO) said it extended a seven-year loan to Mabuhay Interflour Mill, Inc. (MIMI) amounting to P998 million to partly finance the construction of its flour mill in Subic. “The investment of Interflour in the Philippines is a welcome development. BDO supports initiatives by conglomerates that generate employment opportunities in fast-growing business districts like Subic,” BDO SVP and head of international desks Edward Wenceslao said in a statement.

3. 3,139 Pantawid beneficiaries get degrees

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) announced that a total of 3, 139 Pantawid Pamilya beneficiaries graduated from college this school year 2015-2016. Ninety of these students graduated with academic honors and awards. Of the total 1,139 graduates, 57 came from Metro Manila and mostly enrolled at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines and at the Philippine Normal University. “The government is gradually reaping the fruits of the investment it made four years ago. Finishing a college degree gives these youth a fighting chance of improving their lives. Truly, this is the best interest of a government’s investment,” DSWD Secretary Corazon Juliano Soliman said.

4. Potential OFWs cautioned vs jobs offered online

The influential Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines – Episcopal Commission on Migrants and Itinerant Peoples (CBCP – ECMI) is warning those seeking jobs abroad to be very careful about overseas work opportunities  being offered online. CBCP–ECMI Chairman Balanga (Bataan) Bishop Ruperto C. Santos explained that “reputable and legitimate companies normally do not rely on the internet for their recruitment requirements. These companies normally advise the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) for any job opening.”
