Miss Universe PH Pia Wurtzbach Failed Three Times Before She Got The Crown

In the post-event aftermath of the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight, a sports fan’s Facebook status update tried to put a positive spin on the Philippine boxing icon’s loss, citing another big event the country thrives on and that Filipinos look forward to as well. The status update read, “It’s ok. We can make up for the loss during the Miss Universe pageant.” Yes, just like a Pacquiao fight, Filipinos take their pageant-watching ways seriously, and that is an understatement.

What is unmistakable, though, is that our country’s recent batch of remarkable beauty queens have been sources of inspiration, grace under pressure, and in the case of Binibining Pilipinas-Universe 2015 and Miss Universe Philippines 2015 representative Pia Wurtzbach, advice that can serve one’s career too. She shares her thoughts in an article by Rappler’s Alexa Villano. According to Pia, her journey towards becoming a beauty queen required a step that can be applied in the job search and interview process – exercising awareness:

“You have to be aware of your strengths, your weaknesses, what you’re good at, and the things you are not good at,”

There is also something to learn from the confidence exuded by Pia when it comes to dealing with one’s own weaknesses. According to her, exude confidence and faith that nothing can stand in your way in your chosen path, and by doing so, you can also inspire people along the way. This comes from someone who was teased “Piazilla” during her schooling days thanks to her height. She also had to overcome shyness issues:

“Work your way around them [your weaknesses] and then you find what your passion is and get the confidence from there. You don’t have to be a beauty queen or to have a crown for you to inspire other people. That’s what I want for people to learn from us.”

It took Pia three attempts to finally nab the Miss Universe Philippines plum during the 2015 Binibining Pilipinas pageant, so she definitely knows what she is talking about.
