Beginning today, you and countless others will be asking the same question: Why is it a Monday again?
The question is normal for most folks at the start of a brand new week, which begins, well, today. After a weekend of staying idle and focusing on extra-curricular activities, it can be a bit of a struggle to get back into work mode. Some of the 238 questions that you may end up asking include, “Why do I care about my job? Do people who love their jobs even ask this question?”
Ah, do people who actually love their jobs actually exist? Yes, according to an article by writer and career consultant Jennifer Winter. However, the traits we logically associate with these job-loving people are not what we envision them to be. No, they don’t end up sleeping in the office. No, they don’t have statues enacted in their honor. No, they have not ceased to give away their lives. They just embraced more and strove harder in instilling these traits into their professional lives. Truly, as the saying goes, “There is no traffic in the extra mile.”
How do you stack up against these folks? Winter lists three traits they have that we can emulate:
1. They’re comfortable with failure
American motivational speaker and writer, consultant and best-selling author Denis Waitley may have summed up best how to view failure. He said, “Failure should be our teacher, not our undertaker. Failure is delay, not defeat. It is a temporary detour, not a dead end. Failure is something we can avoid only by saying nothing, doing nothing, and being nothing.” The road taken by the most successful companies and individuals to where they are now was fraught with failure. It’s just part of the equation.
The people who love their jobs have the attitude of a successful salesperson: “Every no brings you closer to a yes.” Failure may make its presence felt every now and then but the most important response is what a person will do about it: Fight, flight, or freeze? Embrace the pain of failure – and not in a self-pitying manner – by welcoming and applying the valuable lessons it brings.
2. They’re confident
In a word, believe. Believe in yourself and in your capabilities. And having such a positive belief system can exude itself in the work you deliver and the assignments you choose to focus on, bringing a jolt to your satisfaction and happiness at work. This tip works even for newbies. Always keep in mind that one skill or talent that can be your drawing card, one that you can do exceptionally well. Incorporate this certain skill into your daily office routine. This helps contribute about the work you’re doing and leaves room for the possibility for others to notice you as well. 3. They don’t always love their jobs
Shocked? There is no such thing as a perfect job, even for those who feel they have found their life’s calling in their current workplaces. Those who – as well as those who don’t – love their jobs are aware that life at work has its peaks and valleys. Having a bad day is normal. Things won’t be perfect all the time and that is okay. The sooner one makes peace with this reality, the better your life will be. Make peace with imperfection.
