In the game known as job hunting, hope springs eternal. Or in this case, hope springs internal as well. Seriously. While there are some employees who run for the nearest escape hatch when the going gets tough, what if staying put in your present employment address is the best option that can open doors you were not fully aware existed?
For the card-carrying members of the “grass is greener where you water it” club, this is a bookmark-worthy article by Kimberley Kasper that illustrates why being in the comfort of your current workplace has its advantages in the role transition perspective. The opportunity to work in a new capacity can also be accomplished via an inside job:
What if, instead of searching for the next opportunity at a new company, we started job hunting right where we are? Next time the urge to jump ship takes over, it’s worth considering job searching within your current company. Whether it’s a new department, a promotion or a new position entirely, opportunities abound for job seekers willing to view their companies in a new light.
So yes, it is possible that your personal Egypt or Alcatraz, also known as your office, can also be your portal to fresh and exciting experiences. All this is possible by undergoing a shift in the way you view your present stomping grounds. Kasper shares a few more tips to guide internal job seekers:
1. Leave your frustration behind – If your present company adds up to your unhappiness and you don’t see that changing for the foreseeable future, cut your losses. For those that want to pull their hair out over a challenging, or even irritating, aspect of their work or company, breathe and strive to have an open mind, which can lead to finding additional options and a refreshed outlook. From there, similar to the process of an external job search, research on in-house roles and units that pique your interest. The next step is very Plato-esque: Know yourself. What are your skills that can translate and help the potential team you are eyeing? What would you want to accomplish in your next post within the company? Being immersed in the company is also a plus since it gives you a vantage point of an insider.
2. Recruit your allies – There is no bribing involved here. Instead, this refers to having a strong support system that will be a positive presence as you look for a different place in a familiar home. This pool could make up of a helpful immediate superior, understanding teammates, and co-workers in other teams you liaise with that also provide information about job openings. In addition, they can be of big help once you are designated for a move to another function.
3. Don’t get pigeonholed – Once you’ve made it to a another role, be careful not to run the risk of being pigeonholed. Exhibit a keen drive to learn and to be proactive in fulfilling what is expected of you. Let the new version of you be heard. Officemates may still go to you for expert advice in a previous role once held but it is best to stress, through actions, that it was time to embrace a new skillset and through being transparent on why a career move was in order.
